Belly/Fin Weights

Folks using belly/fin weights for crappie. How much weight would you say is on each clip? I have some old clips laying around and Im thinking about making some fin weights. Thanks for your input.

Commercially available "Crappie fin weights" seem to come in the 1oz to 2oz weight range ... with use description saying use 1 to 3 weights to hold fish down, according to their size.

I've never used them, but I'd think 1oz of dead weight would be sufficient to keep a good sized Crappie turned upright.

1oz is too much for most fish. I like 1/2 oz, on really big fish can use one on each fin. I started with 2oz and it was way too much. If you put the weight on them and they lay on bottom of the livewell on their side they will die.

I was thinking the same thing, buddy. My first thought was 1/2oz, but then looked'em up and 1oz seemed to be the lightest commercially available size. But, some ads did not specify the weights, just colors (for use in culling the smaller fish).

I should have said also, I didn’t buy commercially made clips. I just bought stainless alligator clips off the web and used a small zip tie to attach lead bell sinkers. I fish a lot of tournaments and they have served me well. You can see mine laying beside fish in this picture. Some of mine have rusted a little and need to be replaced but you get the idea.

I've heard of those belly weights being inserted in the belly for walleye tournaments.

OK, I've never heard of this. Forgive my ignorance but what are they used for and how do you use them?
