human thing not necessarily a
fish thing, but we do things to make a lure get more strikes when we have confidence in the lure and its color.
Take this black & chartreuse grub for example - one of my favorite color combos because of how easy it is for fish to see and watch:
Black for the ultimate in contrast and chartreuse for brightness, it
always catches fish on outings.
This is my favorite and my starting color combination but I prefer tube jigs over grubs. I feel the tail provides some action during the vertical jigging I prefer. But I would not go as far as to say it always catches crappie on every outing as I have had days and even weeks when blue/chartreuse with gold flash handties out-fished it.
But I am also of the opinion that the huge variety of color selections in the market are mainly to catch anglers not crappie. And the best looking handtied jigs I am aware of are made by Pepop. His jigs are almost too beautiful to throw in the water. But they catch too many fish not to throw them in the water.
