I've tried most of what's on the market. They appear to make great dock shooters because you can hold the trigger instead of the line. They all had issues and were not worth the trouble for me. The line would get trapped in one fashion or another or the drags would never work right and the bearings in the retrieve were absolute junk. Including a 70$ Pflueger. You'll get way better mileage out of almost spinning reel on the market. I know thats not what you asked. Good luck with your choice for him.

Zebco 44's are around but very hard to find, and costly. A very good choice.
