    Default Next setup question…

Assuming that I get a 12’ B and M rod is a 1000 series spinning reel adequate to balance the weight. I have several 1000 size Shimano reels not mounted on rods.

You want be casting with that rig so a 1000 series reel should be fine.

If you don't like the balance, weight can be added to the butt of the rod until it is to your liking

I’m running shimano 1000series on my rods. It doesn’t perfectly balance out but it’s real close

Dayne, it very well will be determined if the 1000 series reel will balance the 12' BnM rod, depending on WHICH 12' BnM rod we're talking about.

I have a 12' BnM Diamond Series rod that currently has a Okuma STX20 reel on it. I just tested it to see how much weight would have to be added to balance the outfit ... and it turns out it would need an extra 12oz

So, with that in mind, I don't think it would be worth the effort "just" to try and balance the outfit. And if I'm not mistaken, the Diamond Series rods are lighter than many of the other models of BnM rods, so they'd require even more added weight to "balance" them.

But, in any case, if you're using the outfit in a rod holder or for the purpose of Flippin' jigs or vertically jigging with Livescope ... I'm in Grainraiser's camp that you really won't need to balance the outfit as precisely as you would want, were you using the outfit to "cast" with.

I don’t foresee anything but vertical jigging with mega live.

I understand, now, why your interest is in "balance" in your outfit. That said, which 12' BnM rod are you planning to get ?? Knowing that may get responses from members that have that rod, and can tell you what reel they use with it.

I don’t have any idea as I have never seen one. I plan to go to Bass Pro Monday and look at some. I’m not in a big hurry as my boat is currently in the Nitro factory getting warranty work done.

If they will let you, put a 1000 reel on the one you like and see how it feels.

If it were me, and I was looking for a rod primarily for vertical jigging purposes, I'd look for one that was a little on the stiff side. To me, the softer action rods don't transmit light taps as well as the stiffer action ones do. But that's just me, and I haven't done a whole lot of vertical jigging.

Vertical jigging is my favorite way to crappie fish. The stiffer rod makes sense. Most of my vertical rods are sensitive and stiff. My main concern is weight. I am old with small hands that have undergone 6 surgeries. I’ll go stiff if the weight isn’t heavier.
