Default Ultra Light rod for casting jigs

    Hi Everyone,

I am going to building a 7' ultra light rod for Crappie fishing.

This rod will be for casting jigs only, no bobber fishing.

In order to get the most distance from the shore, do I want a mod action? or a fast action?

    Thank you for your input.

No bobber , just jig , I think a fast action would be best .
If you were throwing bobber and jig I would go with Moderate.
JMO , I’m sure others will chime in .
A lot of your distance will be determined by line diameter and jighead weight.

I'm with gillchaser999 on the "fast action" blank. I'd also add to his "distance" requirements of line diameter & jig weight by saying the reel spool diameter or length will also factor into the distance of your casts.

And since you're not planning on using a bobber rig, would you be putting micro guides on the rod ??

I got out late this afternoon for a short thirty minute trip and took a 6’6” light fast rod .
Casting a 1/64 jighead with a Bobby Garland Itty Bitty Swim’R on 3# P-Line on a Daiwa Legalis LT 2000s reel and was surprised how far I could sling that light jig .
May want to consider a light fast rod in a long rod .
Some Ultralights over six feet seem to be a little whippy .

All great info so far. Spool diameter of a 1500 series or larger does make a difference in casting and line memory and management. I use short rods a lot with two lb braid and they perform well. You didn’t state whether or not you were using braid or mono, I don’t think. Mono works better off of the larger spool and depending on your expectations of the cast, might be something you try down the road. One of my better rods, I have no JDM, is the Trout slayer series in 6’6” and I use a President 25 series reel on it with 3 lb fireline crystal. It will cast a tiny rooster tail further than any other rod I have. Someone else will have to tell you if that’s a fast action or not but I think it is. Good luck with the build, let’s see it when you’re done. The TSS I spoke of has micro guides on it also but I’ve never used them with mono or nylon.

I have a lot of UL rods that are rated fast and extra fast. Many of those rods are as rigid as a broom handle…yet make no mistake they are UL rods. I can cast a 1 gram jig a long way. Rod lengths I have are from 4’ 10” to 6’ 10”. I get great distance out of all the rods. When I tell you these UL rods are fast, they are beyond fast. I don’t know of any US market UL rod that is even close to being as fast as JDM UL rods. I have done tons of casting tests with UL rods and I have to tell you there is very little appreciative difference in casting distance between slow, moderate, and fast. As a matter of fact I find it easier to get more distance using a fast action than a slow action. One can over power a slow action rod very easily on the cast. I think you’ll be better served with a fast action. You will get great casting distance and quicker hook sets. Skeet the TSS was designed, and in fact is, a fast action rod. As it was designed to stick a trout using the Trout Magnet. And let me tell you while one can catch trout using a Trout Magnet and a slow action rod one is far better served using a fast action. Was just at Trout Magnet facility today having this very discussion.

no micro. most likely will go with a 20 or 25 reel with 2lb line.

    Thanks
