Vertical fishing is good if your targeting individual fish. Your pretty much pick out the one you want and work on him until you get bit.
When if ever is it better to fish vertical rather than pitch or cast ?

It never is on the lake i fish. You can't get within 20 feet of them most days. Don't matter if they are less than 10' deep or 20' deep...

Usually I will pitch to cover and swim by it and then work my way in close. That’s when I vertical jig the most straight over the cover. Helps with hang ups as well. With Livescope I have started targeting suspended fish in open water and if not skittish will vertical jig them.
a few spots we hit really large fish will sit tight and put up with hovering over them , some spots they bolt like rabbits when you get close , it seems to me the fish that bolt are often in higher pressured waters .
seen big fish 35 deep bolt on the approach before in the winter at lake Fork , but seen big slabs in 10 fow at lake Worth (nobody fishes it) hold still to get hammered with us on top of them in a big monster pontoon with 6 foot rods .
it is likely some spots have fish that have a lower education level in the human predation dept.
