Went fishing with my cousin Friday evening after work. It has been a weird year for fishing at my local electric only lake. As far as I've seen the bigger crappie have not gone into the shallow water (10 feet or less) yet this year. They had started to stage in 15 to 20 ft depths about a month ago then we got a cold front with snow and lots of rain that seemed to push all the fish back into the deeper end of the lake (lake is about a mile long not real wide). Since the cold front it seems only smaller fish (8 inch and under) have moved to the shallow end. 2 weekends ago I caught over 150 crappie with around 40 over 9.5 inches, the bigger ones were caught on treetops in the middle to deeper end of the lake.
The last 2 trips I've checked the treetops in the deeper end of the lake with livescope very few if any fish were on them. Last evening moving towards the shallow end we started seeing scattered fish on the livescope in the 20 to 25 feet of water. We caught some with 2 over 9.5 inches. We moved a couple of times with the fish getting smaller the more shallow the water got. Later in the evening we went back to the 20 to 25 feet depth. My cousin ended up catching a 12-13 in trout and then a 14-15 in bass along with some less than 9 in crappie.
I was using a black and chartruse trout magnet on an orange jig head fishing an Abu Garcia 6'7" slow taper special with Varivas 3lb Hi Vis Advance Trout line when I hooked a good fish. I thought maybe I had hooked a trout or green carp like my cousin had earlier as it was pulling drag on my Diawa Legalis reel. I got pretty excited when it got closer to the boat and I saw that it was a crappie, It made another drag pulling run then I got it next to the boat where my cousin netted it for me.
I put it in the crappie checker, it just barely reached to bottom of the checker and stuck out over the end of the checker. Hung it on the small scale I just put in the boat this year. Weighed 0.79 lb.
When we got home I got a good measurement. Just a smidge over 12 3/4 inches and 12.6 oz
