You won the battle but the war is still on.
Great job.
This lake I fish in spring has a seasonal weed pattern that must be adapted to. Early on the weeds grow within 3.5' of the surface regardless of depth whether in 5' or 9'. So, all I have to do is fish the same as I would in 3.5' and keep lures within that space. Late April and May - numbers and quality! As the weeds die, they float to the surface before sinking to the bottom an large masses of dead weeds are all over the lake along with large bare bottom to surface weed free water.
I hit a large open area in 5-6' near one shore using a hand-poured clear plastic curl tail. As usual, color didn't matter in the least under the cloudy sky and in murky water. Before casting the first cast, I noted any baitfish on the sonar and once indicated, fan cast around the boat. Fish were parallel to shore so I cast behind and in front of the boat making 40' casts. The strikes were strong from 10-11" crappie.
After 15 fish, the bite drifted off and then I moved to another area not far away. I decided to go to a Crappie Magnet in different colors and caught crappie, sunfish and one yellow perch.
So I figured: the clear plastic curl tail worked, why not give them some more contrast against the cloudy sky and so I wen to a dark color:
But when thing when considering contrast, color plus size go hand in hand. Note the fat body obtained by dipping the body in hot plastic. The same for this Mo Magic design, flat straight-tail and the clear curl tail above:
Of course there's no way I would leave the lake and not catch fish on whip-tail worms and the Kut tail worm:
A chartreuse round taper-tail did well:
Jigheads were on the light side: 1/32 and 1/24 oz.
A storm was coming - thunder heard - so I figured 87 fish was enough for an afternoon of fishing. When I got home it poured! Got in just in time!
