There’s a couple of thoughts that I see going on. You’re looking to stay with a 2500 reel for whatever reason, that I understand. My preference is a 1000 or 1500 after going through a learning curve of about 15 years. Just my preference, not trying to influence. For casting, with a reel like you state, a light action between 6 and 7 feet long would do you well. You want some flex in the tip, like maybe a medium fast at the most. One I would like you to handle is a St Croix premier 66lf one piece rod. About $125, give or take. Has a very good feel to my likings, active words being my likings. Buy nothing that you don’t handle because you already have in mind what you’re after. Doesn’t matter who recommends what, handle before you buy. If you fish tight quarters then a shorter rod and a slightly different action might apply better. I mostly fish 2lb ultralight in tight quarters with a 5’6” rod and 1000 reel. Different strokes and be careful. Don’t let the little line fool ya, I catch some very good fish now and then. If you ever try this light setup, be prepared for another rabbit hole to maneuver.
For pitching with a longer rod, like I’ve seen folks do with live scope, the choices are easier. Between 8 and 10 feet will do very well, and I like the Sam Heaton Super Sensitive line of rods. Mine is a 10’ with the rear reel seat like a fly rod and balances perfectly at the touch spot hole in the cork so that a finger has direct contact with the blank. Very good asset. If the balance is right, you hold the weight of the rod and reel and don’t have to hold the tip up constantly which causes fatigue and makes this no fun. Also, when the rods right it jumps in your hand when the fish thumps it. That thump is the jig hitting the back of the fishes mouth and on a tight line it can be massive. Whether you choose regular handle or rear reel seat models is up to you, once again, handle WITH YOUR REEL before you buy. You have some homework ahead of you but if you’re patient and spend a little time getting to handle some of the rods that others and I suggest, you’ll be happy with your choice, I’m sure. I chased green fish once too, now they’re just bycatch. Good luck and keep us posted as we all will learn something from your experience.
