Persistence kept the skunk off. The winds been pretty brutal so far this season. Seems like it's either raining like crazy or the winds whipping it up here.
It has been very windy for three days, but today was calm. Hopped in the old truck for the one minute drive to the launch. Looked for the three steers on our permanent pasture. Saw them lying down in the shade; should have been a sign. The dog and I took the short boat ride to a spot that has given hundreds of crappie already this year including 30 just the other night. The water temperature is 65*,but the water isn't clear like it was, 1.5ft of visibility now compared to 7 feet the other day. I started working for them, and it was not happening! I missed a very few half hearted little takes and finally caught one that must have been literally laying on bottom just like the cattle. I moved to another proven area and picked up two more. One big female with eggs leaking out and a small female already spawned. I am sure I will have more easy days, but that was really a major slow day.

I was trenching in a conduit from a cell tower out in the middle of the pasture to the roadway. The soil was alot tougher than anticipated and I had to get a bigger trencher delivered to hand the job. Along about midnight here come all the cows running across the pasture and into a depression in the ground. A few minutes latter me and the helper were in the work truck down in the bottom of the same depression as a tornado went overhead. The wind blowing across the guy wires on the tower sounded like a jet engine powered up for takeoff. Those cows were ar least ten minutes ahead of that storm.

They must feel the air pressure changes and who knows what else. Good story.

lots of cows laying down makes me sad , lack of activity in animals in the outdoors often indicates less than good traffic on fish and wildlife , a few cows laying down is one thing , but pasture after pasture of them laying down bothers me some ....just saying
on the other hand dear sir , the spawn only lasts so long and you been on em a while now, sooner or later the cows aint gunna have nothing to do with them being up on the beds my friend
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
I have a garden pond with goldfish and koi. I’ve started watching them. It seems if they are active the crappie bite is decent. If the are suspended not moving around the crappie bite is slow.
