Though it wasn't a crappie there is a fish that haunts me to this day. I hooked it on an underwater road bed beside Kentucky State Penitentiary. Largest small mouth I've ever had on the end of a line. I had it to the side of the boat, reach for the net.... I let the line get slack for a split second. I think that fish was laughing as it spit the lure. I wish it had been an equipment failure so I could blame something besides me. The funny thing is I remember the whole fight and the end of the fight and it was 25 years ago. Sorry to get so far off topic.

I had nightmares on one fish a few years ago , we got eye to eye long enough to make me return to that spot for a week straight trying to get that monster to go one more round with me .

Aww when that happens to me I always rationalize with a "was simply a quick release to keep from taking slime off that monster fish". when actually would have taken a quick pic and THEN released it. But it's stuck in my mind forever more.

Worse is when your delbert buddy hooks a monster but says "oh it's only a dang drum" and does everything he can to get it off his line, letting slack in and hitting side of boat with rod, while I am insisting it could be a crappie and having the net in back of boat on my knees and it surfaces for a split second and WAS the Crappie of a lifetime for this delbert! course it spits hook at said moment but both of us saw it. STILL give him grief about that many years later.
