    I was thinking along the same lines as SuperDave...Leech is what came to mind.

    It might likely just be highly visible to them in deeper water as well , we must remember they see the world different than we do . Not sure why it works, but it seems to be something you NEED to take with you when you visit there .
    And to make it more interesting feathers , not plastics , black plastics get about 1 bite to 6 or 7 , this is likely do to the water temps. making the plastics not look real .

    I know the eggs are, but not sure about the fry. At least the ones I have seen up close and personal weren't...

    when we used to manage ponds and raise fish to ketch ,the hatchery told us most of our "spawned" channel would likely not survive due to them being bright orange when hatched , much like you , it remains a mystery to me ,never seen a just hatched one either ....
