I know these are more of a cast and retrieve bait, but do any of you have any success vertical jigging road runners?

Really just about any plastic that catches fish, will also catch fish when added to a RR. The blade adds some extra movement, sound, and vibration to the plastic. An enhancement of the plastic over what it would normally be.

Lures are funny. Some fellers get real good with a lure, while others do not have anywhere near as much success. A dumb little tube jig can be a joke on one man’s rod, and on another man’s rod a fish catching machine. Seems to me that all lures are little bit like this. Some refer to this phenomena as a confidence lure. One that the man believes will work, so he sticks with it until it starts to produce. Then gains confidence because it has proven itself, and goes on to develop his skill set with that lure. I suspect we all have favorites and the RR is a favorite of many fishermen.

I really cannot think of a style of fishing where the RR would be ineffective. Maybe you should try it again, only this time pretending to have confidence and see if things improve for you. That is how I do it when trying something new. Stick with it like a bulldog on a bone and force it to do for you.

I make several designs of under spin jigs and believe that there are indeed times when the fish do not want a blade. However those times they do, it will out produce a non bladed lure. Another arrow in my quiver.
Maybe they will bite this one……

if you read my comment you will notice it is the way if often use them , they are deadly on a slow fluttering fall down a big lone tree trunk .
and slightly to the side of a brush pile fluttering slowly towards it at a sharp downward angle can result in some mighty hard takes too

Same techniques I use when long lining but with a little extra vibration and flash. I like the idea of it. A new little trick I can’t wait to try. Now if the ice would just go away. What body for Road Runner head

I love fishing road runners, they're my go-to bait in the spring and fall. My last trip was on December 26, 45 degree water temp, and my road runner absolutely wore them out.

As far as a body, I mostly tie my own. Chartreuse head and tail with a black chenille body is my favorite.
