Years ago as a young boy we fished with hook, bobber and a worm. Seemed to catch a lot of blue gill and crappie. I don’t see anyone commenting on using worms. Is that a thing of the past?

Welcome to the forum from N. Alabama. For bream and shell cracker earthworms and wiglers are my go to. Definitely caught some good crappie letting it pendulum the slopes looking for beds. Trout magnets are definitely a good option if you tired of the squishy things.

the panfish forum is the place for seeing stuff on panfish baits ,like nightcrawlers , crappie will eat worms without a doubt , but more often than not , minnows and jigs are the bait of choice for them .

Don't use because it's disgusting.
Have caught some on worms. Especially when fishing a swollen creek after a rain.

Many bait shops have gone out business forcing a change to artificial. The further away you get from large public waters the harder it gets to find bait.

At least here most Walmarts have a selection of night crawlers, waxies, mealworms, red wigglers, and honey worms.
