    Default Drag chains

Heading back to Astor on the 24th and being told that a lot of the people down there now, are using a drag chain behind boats to slow them down in the winds/currents. Any of you use a drag chain? I know that they are really popular with the kayak folks, but does anyone use them with their boats?

If you do, would you mind giving me dimensions. size of chain used and is it covered in some way?

    Thanks..

I would think the chains would really tear up any structure in the area.

Well, I asked the same questions! Apparently that is what they are doing down there! Drifting with the winds while dragging a chain. Drag chains

Yeah I am pretty sure those who drag chains are fishing open water. My dad use to do it when we would drift fish for catfish.

Actually, from what I was told, they are fishing in less than 5’ of water! This is why they are using the chains. Allows them to keep the TM turned off and still spider rig/troll and keep moving slowly! Heck, I had the same concerns but they are catching a lot of fish with this method!

Drag chain is simple. The primary function of the drag chain is to keep the boat from spinning while drifting. About 3 feet of log chain. Rope and chain together about a foot shorter than what can get into the prop. A bicycle innertube in the rope and chain set up to act as a shock absorber is also helpful as is a boat fender to act as a float if the chain hangs up and is separated from the boat. connect to boat with a light string or a wire that will bend open You do not want to sink your boat if the chain gets hung while you are in heavy current. This is the best write up I have found on building one, I am a bit more careful than Ham:

They sure enough stain the water up. I've often wondered how well it do to use a "fat sack" full of water on the back deck to weight it down.
