So, it wasn’t actual “cane poles”, but this:
Ten seems to be a magic number, according to Jackson. The anglers used custom, 10-foot, 10-weight fly rods, with 10 feet of 10-pound monofilament line tied to the eye at the rod’s tip. “Then they have their jig and a cork,” Jackson said. “It’s just like a cane pole set-up, but in graphite.”
A 10-weight is a very stiff, heavy-action fly rod. It’s used for big fish, like musky, stripers and small tarpon. If that’s the set up, I’d rather use a 10’ BnM telescopic pole.

If they we’re using 10-weight rods, the fish were definitely coming into the boat.
“10-weight Fly Rods
These are good choices when fishing for extremely heavy Freshwater applications. 10-weight fly rods are also used for medium to heavy Saltwater applications such as tarpon, salmon, roosterfish, and permit, where fishermen are casting very heavy or large flies – typically with extreme wind situations.”
