    Default Rescue dog

So guys I’ve been wanting a dog to fish with now that I’m retired. So we adopted a rescue dog and she’s the sweetest dog ever. I’ll be open to advice since I’ve never fished with a dog before. I’m gonna check my boat REAL GOOD for hooks on the floor.
    Beagle and catahoula mix.

I’d suggest introducing her to the boat at home if possible. Get her in there with you and feed her a few times.
Once she’s comfortable head to the lake on a nice day and see how she does.
I’d have someone along. One control the boat and one handle the dog.
    Good luck.

The little Bulldog jumps out. He would rather bark at me in the boat while he is on the ground. They both like to ride in the truck. The Shepherd has her nose out the window until 45mph then she lays down
The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along

Good on the lead. Jumps in back of Land Rover on command.
Not had him in boat yet.
Suggestions were to put him in boat in garage a few times and then to trolling motor lake first.
Keep in touch on your progress.
Going to feeder supply for PFD for him soon.
    Chuck

I tried it with my lab and every time I would hang a fish he would jump in and try to catch it. He did the same thing while my wife and I were trout fishing, as soon as he saw the fish he went in wide open. We have a creek on our property and he would get in it trying to catch minnows.

Vicki and I adopted a 1 year old Boykin female thru Boykin Rescue in October. She is everything we had hoped for—crate trained, housebroken, beautiful. At 30 pounds she is our first house dog. My job is to train her in obedience and calming down around new people. She gets so excited she jumps and even wets herself around our granddaughter!

I’ve trained several labs over the years to be good citizens. Savy is going to be a challenge in that regard. I had hoped to get her in the boat last fall but even now she can’t be trusted off the leash. Until she is steady in that regard I will not trust her in my boat with clients.

Once I’m back on my feet and driving after my shoulder replacement, I plan on putting her on a serious obedience plan. I want to introduce her to my boat slowly. I’ve already had her in the boat in the garage a couple of times. The 23’ Excel Storm Cat will be great for her to find space out from under foot but also plenty of room for her to find trouble. She will probably fish with Vicki and Me alone this year.

One of my labs, Kutter, became a trusted fishing partner who rarely let my boat leave the garage without being along. I hope to get Savy to that point soon. I think the main thing is to let her mature out of her current puppy stage. My labs were puppies until 2-2.5 years. Since we don’t know exactly how old Savy is, I’ll depend a lot on her letting me know when she wants to be an adult.
