In a pinch wrapping it around a pokect knife to break it off sure saves some deep nasty cuts

I'm sure a cheaper braid my be fine to use, there usually thicker and that maybe a good thing.

I use Nanofil with a swivel and fluoro leader. I have not had problems with hooks pulling out. I'm kind of worried Berkley might have discontinued it though. The chartreuse color and spools larger than 150 yards have gotten impossible to find.
    Don't worry, catch crappie.

if you point the rod directly towards whatever you are hung on and grab the spool firmly it works pretty well , but it often sinks the braid into the spool

I use a braid I got off Amazon called Calamus Bastion. Not real expensive but works very well. Last week I landed a 32 pound 4 oz blue catfish on 8 pound test. Don't think I'll be able to use this jig again....Name: 20220106_121457.jpg

That is my usual method for bending a hook out. A short cast afterward and pull line off the spool until the underwraps are out and I am back to shooting.
