I have been told that when trolling a crank with a 2oz weight and 3 ft leader, your depth will be about 2/3 of the amount of line out. I have trouble understanding this. Is that the depth to the weight then you add the diving depth of the crank to it? If you have a 6 ft deep running crank it would run about 3 ft shallower than a 9ft runner right? I really am getting confused on this.

The 2/3 of line "out" is actually 2/3 of the line "below the surface" ... and only when your line is at ~ a 45deg angle. Or you can think of it as ... for every 5ft of line out below the surface, your crank will be 3ft deep. Or you can do what I do and multiply the length of line out below the surface by 0.6 to get your depth (of the weight).
I only assume the crank to run a foot or so below the trolling weight on a 3ft leader. A 5ft leader was what I was taught to use and I still only assume the crank to run 2-3ft below the weight. Since my lines are rarely at a 45deg angle, I just let the extra diving depth of the crank make up for the more shallower angle of my line.
I was taught to run a 2oz trolling sinker ... 5ft leader ... at 1.8mph ... 30/10 braid main line ... 6lb test leader. My TM won't maintain that speed in any headwind, so I'm usually running closer to 1.5mph or slightly less.
As to the normal running depth of your crank (say 6ft deep), it's not going to be able to run that deep behind the trolling weight, like it would attached to the main line .... especially on a 3ft leader. IMHO (just think how deep it would run with 3ft of line out past your rod tip, with the rod tip barely under the surface ... no way it can run 6ft deep and it can't run that deep with a 5ft leader, either.)
