crappie cocaine is my jig tipper of choice , ie ...berkley gulp brand glow crappie nibbles
but it could be that a pinched in half minnow is as good and or many of the numerous other scents as well .
scent seals the deal on the more wary fish ,the dumber versions will eat a plain jig readily .
fish slime off a fresh crappie is really good as well on feather jigs .
getting one to look at or follow a jig is a good thing , getting one to eat it is a way better thing , just saying

"Everything eats a shrimp" words from our Marine Biologist. They trap the Prawn migrations in the various Mississippi rivers including the Big Muddy. It's remarkable the amount of freshwater shrimp is our there. I trap using a single funnel #4 hardware cloth pancake trap. A can of cat food is used for bait. When the crappie are on the bank even during "Lock Jaw" days you drop a live prawn in the water the crappie fight to get to it. I am in the same situation as posters above, I catch more than I need but when I started I used grass shrimp on my jigs. It worked great for me. When setting a shrimp trap the funnel always is on the down stream end of the trap. Once mature the shrimp "March" up and down river with the tides here. If you want to keep some in long term storage you have to provide something for the shrimp to crawl on to get out of the water. Big prawns do catch everything. A Fish Buffet!

[QUOTE=catchNgrease;4208161]Shrimp maybe...crappie nipples definitely. But if I catch another worm in my boat heads are gonna roll and you ain't getting another invite....ROFL. Them things are nasty

.You had me at crabs & flounder. Captain D's is my only resource for them.

LOL Come on now. IFFIN ( one of my Carolina words ) you don't use worms and crickets you ain't a full fledge fisher- person. LMBO

Have crab pots and a eel trap I use off the dock here. I'm into about everything to do with fishing all but this new to me crappie fishing which I'm dead ahead on learning from you gentleman. Now that i'm home not working adding a winter hobby tickles me to death. Striper and crappie in winter everything else warmers months. Man could get right use to all this. LOL

Your close if you talking about Captain Ds in Hertford. Love fishing that river. My boat will get under the train trestle where my lady friends won't. I'll be fishing there by end of the week providing I get everything wired up.

Jack, went through my ton of tackle last night found 30 pound braid moss green which will work prefect in my waters. Seen you mentioned 40 pound 10 die, I'm using 30, 8 die. See i'm paying attention. LOL I have a tackle store in my shop for offshore and stripers. Also have 10 pound fireline 4 die so will play with those see if size makes a difference to this fish.

Have several nets one is a 12 footer when we have summers here with little rain the waters are mostly salty use to throw that 12 footer off my bass boat. Have to use a smaller 6 footer in the tracker standing down in the bottom to many rod holders as of yesterday.. LOL
I have loaded a cooler with shrimp here on the Little River where I live took till 11 pm to clean all them. LOL Don't happen to much but now and then I get to enjoy Dolphins swimming by the dock. Oregon inlet feeds the Albemarle Sound. Naturally when the water levels drop ocean water flows in the inlet our water turns salty. Wind driven tides . No natural tide this far inland. I"m 36 miles by water to the inlet. 74 miles by road. Hurricane country but the fishing here is off the charts. Use to bring a 1000 crickets be out in three days years ago coming with the group of guys I came here with bream fishing . its still that way but traveling with work has put me behind in a lot of things. Not any more..
