    Default Daiwa warranty question

my son purchased a new Daiwa Procyon AT LT spinning reel approx 8-9 months ago, he was having problems the anti reverse was not working all the time and the spool started to wobble, seemed like excessive play, he took it back to the dealer and the dealer told him to pack it up with the sales invoice and ship it to Daiwa. about a week later he gets a call that the reel is repaired, but there is a lubrication charge and shipping charges, they told him $90 plus dollars, he said he thought the warranty was 100% covered, rather than pay the near 100 dollars, he just said send the reel back, the lady on the phone said the technician will not release the reel unless payment is made. this reel cost him $179.00 my feeling is Daiwa should have contacted him before doing the repairs and tell him there would be a 90 some dollar charge, how can we get this reel back, and the warranty is puzzling, this should have been 100% covered, is Daiwa's warranty going south.

Lubrication and shipping 90 bucks ? That's probably more than it would cost for the company to send a new reel . Guess I would tell them to keep it lesson learned . Buy another brand from now on . They should warn people there could be excessive charges .

This is what they post online

    REEL WARRANTY

Daiwa will repair or replace, without charge, any Daiwa reel which is defective in workmanship or materials for a period of one year from the date of purchase by the consumer (please note for all electric reels the warranty extends for a period of 1 year, or 200 hours of usage, whichever comes first). The warranty extends only to the original owner. Once the reel is received, our service technicians will inspect to identify the issue, and if it is determined to be a manufacturing defect, we will repair the reel and send it back to you at no charge. If the damage is determined to not be warranty eligible (missing parts, accidental, misuse, inadequate care, wear and tear) we will contact you with a price estimate before starting any work. Please follow these instructions when returning reels for warranty repair: Do not remove parts, enclose proof of purchase and a Repair Request Form with nature of problem. Also, please list the model name and number of reel and your return address. To protect against loss or damage in transit, your reel should be carefully packaged and adequately insured. Please retain all shipping receipts.

That is bad when a company does not hold up their end of the agreement. A reputation like that could be very bad for business

Pennsylvania Attorney Generals Office, have your son either write to them, or I think he can file a complaint online. I would include their warranty that Nimrod shared, or go to their site and add to complaint. Trust me, they won't be happy hearing from the state. From that warranty, I would say that they are in the wrong, charging anything, except for shipping.

Never send an original receipt, but a copy of it. That way, if you have to go thru a state complaint, you still have the original to share with them.

Not sure, but he might also be able to call the State Attorney Office.

I am curious if your son sent the reel to a Daiwa Authorized Service Center or to Daiwa USA in Cypress, CA? While you would think they work the same they do not...they should though. If he sent it to a service center and not Daiwa USA in Cypress, CA I would contact Daiwa USA and tell them what happend. If he was already dealing with Daiwa USA then Daiwa service has sure gone down hill.

I don't understand why the dealer didn't send it in....with most things the warranty starts with the dealer, not the consumer.

I bought 14 Diawa Linecounter reels last year. I've had to send 6 of them back for the same issue, anti-reverse failed. They were all covered under warranty but when I sent the last one it, I sent a hand-written letter about their quality issues.

Sadly quality is slipping on everything we buy as consumers these days. If they can make a gew nore cents with a less durable part that is what will be used. All about the profit margins

Yeah, I spoke with Doug, he's certainly not happy about the quality issues he encountered, especially cause he's a guide, and these are his tools of the trade (as he made mention). But the thing is, we don't allow personal attacks here on crappie.com and we don't allow attacks on companies either. So he let me edit his post a little. Thanks Dougie, and thanks guys, talk about your experience, but please no attacks.
