    Default Weedless jighead advice

Hey, people. Those who know me know that I fish off a jet ski. Been doing that for 5 years - both fresh and salt water.

I went out today on Lake Livingston (11/6/21) and like all other times searching for the elusive crappie, I was using minnows.

Nibbles were slow too darn near non existent. So, for the first time I tied on a jig and was shocked at the amount of bites I had. Moreover, I landed 16 crappie (personal best on Lake Livingston) for me.

Getting snagged was the main issue. I lost almost all jigs. I got so mad that i jerked my rod so hard I fell of the dang ski. Learned something, though. Water was about 6' deep... Cold too...

I know there are weedless jig heads and am very interested in grabbing a life time supply. Only issue is I do not know what are the best. Any suggestions are appreciated!

    Jeff - still cold...

That was an interesting post on a different way to fish. At least the water wasn’t deep!

You have a few options. You can use jig heads with weed guards if you like. I used 10lb braid when fishing such conditions. When you get hung you just use a steady tug and straighten the hook out. Reshape it with a pair of pliers and keep fishing. I find this method much more effective than using weedless wire guards for the style of fishing I do.

Can’t stand weedless jig heads they don’t like to get stuck to fish mouths either. Have you tried braided line instead?

Also 6 fow maybe long enough rod and reel tip right to snag and just push it off,

I use TimmyTom's. Not sure that they're the "best", but he is local and I like them.

Richard Gene has a YouTube video explaining how to make your own out of heavy mono. But if you going to buy some I recommend the single wire ones. Over time you just learn what you can and can't do fishing brush. Small diameter braid will work also. Training the jig to bend with a cigarette lighter will help also. Not burying the nibble but placing on the tip helps. Not overreaching with your rod helps. Keeping the Jet ski still will help.

I use braid to shoot docks. You can pull most jigs loose. I still break off some. The drawback when fishing brush is you could pull a brushpile apart. At bare minimum you will spook the fish on the pile.
