    Default Need rod size advice

    Hello all,
I am planning on getting a dedicated panfish rod/reel soon. I have heard many wonderful things about the St Croix Panfish rod. I only fish from the shore. Hopefully a boat will be coming in the future. I plan on pairing with a Pflueger President 25 reel. This will be my first spinning rod/reel. Curious what size rod you would select? My other two good casting rods are 7’. The Panfish series comes in a 7’ light, extra fast or a 6’4” light fast. What would be better for a shore fisherman like myself? Thanks.

I just put a 25 series President on a 6.6 ACCCRAPPIESTIX rod and like it very well. If I remember correctly the rod weighs 3.4 oz. and has plenty of backbone with a fast tip. Havent used it much but I like the way it balanced out. Not pushing ACCCRAPPIESTIX but I have 5 of and like them all.
Hope this helps and you find something you like.
    Chuck.

If you’re considering St. Croix, you should also take a look at the Triumph and Premier models.

A SC Triumph light fast in 6’6” is a nice rod for a good price for bank fishing .

I think a shorter rod length for bank fishing is the way to go. Longer rods are an accident waiting to happen, especially if you have to walk through brush to get to bank. 2cents

All depends on the bank you’re fishing .
On a creek , I can see where a shorter rod would be better , but fishing most lakes and reservoir, it all about longer casts . Longer casts means a greater area coverage .
    JMO YMMV .

I use Mr. Crappie Speed Shooter combos for bank fishing and tight quarters fishing when on the boat. They are stout little combos and priced affordably.

If the rod is two-piece ... you can always break it down if you have to transport/carry it thru dense woods or overgrown trails. If not a two-piece, I suggest carrying it with the rod tip end facing behind you. A rod sock that has a bungie or stretchy belt to wrap around the reel is also a viable option to keep the outfit from getting tangled while walking in the brush.

The biggest negative for a short rod for bank fishing, IMHO, is not so much related to casting distance as it is to good hook-setting at a distance. The longer rod will take up much more slack line (& line stretch) on the hookset, do it faster and with less arm/shoulder movement than with the shorter rods. That's an even greater advantage when one is using a float.
