    Here’s an older model Johnson reel. It’s made to look like a baitcaster but it’s a spin cast. Johnson Javelin.

    Don't think I've ever had a Johnson reel ... but my Grandpa had a Johnson Century (the green cowl 100b one) that I always wanted. I think my Uncle ended up with it, and I ended up with two 8' fly rods/automatic reels of his. Oddly enough, I never saw him "fly fish" with them ... but he did use them to Crappie fish with (leader had a hook/sinker on it) back when we used minnows "still fishing" (*boat tied off to standing trees). It always amazed/tickled me when he would "set the hook" by simply pushing the lever on the reel.

    I have a couple of those automatic reels around here. Some that look like a conventional fly reel and some that lay flat. Watched an old timer flat wear out the brim using one of those when I eas a kid

    I have owned Johnson Century, 710, Sabre. All great working reels.
