In spring and summer ,I will use a waxworm or a nibble on a jig. Ice fishing,I will jig with a waxworms or a maggots.

Slab sauce works great. Never hurts to have something to mask those human scents.
The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along

I have never used waxworms. Can they take the summer heat?
Might try some on my next gill run, probably this weekend. Petsmart has them here.
Am in NC, so it will be high 80's this weekend.

They are okay to about 80F when fishing and then they start dying off pretty fast. I have what is called a bait puck that I use when fishing, an old school chew can works too or any kind of small container. Put 8-10 in the container and in your pocket while fishing, and then keep the rest in the cooler. Reload when needed.
They will last a long time kept at 60-65 at your house, weeks. Just need a dark dry place and keep in a container that spiders cant get into. Not a good idea to use a fridge unless its a bait fridge set at 50-60. If you buy them from a shop that has them in a fridge, look at them and poke them before buying, if they are flat and look like a deflated balloon then you need to pass on them. They should be plump and feel almost hairy. You can also order them online from speedyworm.com, that is how I get mine because the local shops all kill them in a cold fridge (although I would think petsmart would know to keep them alive). They sell bait pucks at speedyworm too I believe.
Brown, grey, or black ones are no good... toss those out immediately.
The crappie in my avatar was caught on waxworm.
