I fish for bass and catfish on occasion but prefer crappie fishing. I like the challenge of finding them. I like the feel of the thump or watching a bobber go under. Also, they taste good!

For the tug! First off, they're tasty, but everyone knows that. And the big thrill is simply "the catching". When crappie fishing you're using a bait that most any fish will take, so you never know quite what's on the end of that line. That's kinda of the thrill, just not knowing, and waiting, and seeing what it is. Big crappie, small one, bullhead, brim, bass, you just never know. And then pulling it in, the fight, waiting for the moment you figure it out, that's my thrill. Seems to bring me back to my youth!

My brother says I beat to a different drum, and I guess he is right. I seem to resist following the crowd, so much so that I will figure out how to be the only one going against the grain. All this maybe true, and I am enjoying myself fully. Even further than that I use a noodlerod that cannot be purchased anymore, indicating that I am pretty much alone in the desire to use a rod that bends tip to butt fighting crappie.

It became an addiction once I was told 15 was my limit. From Mar 2020 until now, I've only put 2 limits on my boat. Each day is a new challenge. I fish for bass, catfish and trout, but there something about chasing a limit of crappie. Like chasing that 10 pound bass or 20" rainbow with a fly rod, it's a goal. Plus I love being outdoors, I love being on my boat and absolutely love eating crappie. I throw all other fish back.

It first started out as a hobby and a way to eat some good fish. Now it's the thrill of the hunt. The ever changing and learning of new techniques. I very rarely keep fish now. But when I lay down at night and close my eyes I can see the bobber go under or feel the jolt from a deep water fish. My wife says I sometimes set the hook in my sleep. I guess you can say it's in my blood or just an addiction. I hope I never get cured.

As a kid I fished for catfish, for that is what my grandfather taught me. They were good eating then and still are good eating. As a teenager I started fishing for bass, as that was all the cool fishermen chased. Then along came Bassmasters, when all the fools with their bad manners started fishing for bass with all the standards fishing etiquette of chased from their minds with their dreams of winning big money. Most never achieved their dreams but their rules of bad conduct on the lake remains to this day.

So I switched to fishing for bream and crappie as those who fished for these two classes of fish still were ruled by the standards of good fishing etiquette. Unfortnately the bad manners of bass fishing are now coming to crappie fishing with the advante of crappie tournaments and their dreams of big money. So far there are no bream tournaments so you can still find good manners among those who fish for bream.

It's hard to match the fun of fighting a bull bream on an ultrlight rod and reel combo.

Crappies will hit artificial baits as I do not use live baits.

I just like to fish in general, and I'll take whatever bends the rod. For me it's a way to disconnect from the world. I like to bring the kids along as well because there is no Wi-Fi Xboxes Nintendo switches or even way to plug them in on the boat. It also helps them learn that food comes from more places than the grocery store.

I get a lot of satisfaction from solving the ever-changing puzzle that is the pattern of the crappie and the presentation needed to get them to bite. Also, there is just something about that thump that sets them apart from other fish.
