Default Reel Match For Leland TSS - Legalis or Sahara

Hi All. I am looking to buy a new reel to go with my TSS Trout Slayer. I currently have a Shimano Sedona 500 that at 6.7 oz balances very nicely. Right now I'm considering two reels - a Daiwa Legalis 1000 at 6.5 oz, and a Shimano Sahara 1000 at 7.6 oz. I like the features of both reels, but my concern would be how the TSS would balance with the heavier Sahara. I'm looking for opinions from those that have matched either of those reels with the TSS. As an aside, I'm also going to buy the slightly longer and heavier TCB this coming season, and that could also change how the Sahara would balance.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have 7 oz reels on my 6’5” to 6’9” JDM rods, and they balance just fine.

I’m with Disco on this. When I tested the TSS and TCB rods I tried reels from 5 1/2 ounces up to a Shimano TwinPower that weighs 7 3/4 ounces because of the aluminum knob I put on it. They all balanced fine. I do prefer the Daiwa LT line of reels as they make my whole setup lighter in the hand but nothing wrong with a 7 plus ounce reel on these UL rods.

    Regards

Thanks for the replies. That was especially nice, Randy, in that I got a lot of reel weight info in one reply! My fishing sessions are almost always limited to a few hours locally so a heavier reel wouldn’t be a burden. That said, I like how light the setup feels now with the 6.5 oz reel. Daiwas get a lot of favorable reviews so I can think about it for a bit. The Sahara’s also have a lot of happy users.
    Thanks again,
    Bob

Bought my TCB as a combo and can’t remember the name of the reel that it came with but it’s balanced great.

Sounds like you have a nice combo, Chaunc. I think I have a pretty good idea now of the weight range that would work. I’ll scout B’n’M and TM and see what weight reel they were matching it with.

Shimano reels have changed . I have always been mainly a Shimano person , although my favorite is probably a Daiwa Fuego team 1000 . Smoothest light 1000 reel I’ve ever owned .
Anyway , my last three Shimano purchases have not been good ones .
It seems that ever since they went to HG gearing , the reels bind up when they get a load on them .
    All three have been 500 size reels , a Sahara , a Sedona , and a Nasci .
The Sahara and Nasci have loosened up some , but not as much as I like . I have to put a couple drops of Lucas reel oil on the spool shaft before I take them fishing . The Sedona I was able to return .
The Shimanos wind smooth until you catch a fish , even a small gill .
None of the new ones are as smooth as my older Sahara 500 and Symetre 500 reels
    I also have a Daiwa Legalis LT 1000 . It’s been a nice addition to stable .

This problem has been around for years with Shimano. So much so it garnered the nickname “Shibindo”. It happened with me back in 2012 with a couple of Sahara reels. It stems from the nylon bushings they use. When they get wet…..and I don’t mean a dunking…..it could just be very moist outside and it can happen…..they swell with water and bind. Of course this does not happen with every single reel they make but it happens enough. Many fishing forums over the years have a lot of posts about this.

    Regards

I agree , it doesn’t happen with all of their reels .
But you don’t know until you take one fishing and unfortunately with the Sahara and Nasci , it was past time to return them .
So, I keep them well oiled and take them out , hoping to break them in . They have gotten a little better.

I think I got lucky with my Sedona 500. Fell in the creek (yet once again) and dunked the reel, but a quick clean and lube at home no problem. I do believe I read here that Shimano did address the problem and corrected it.
