Personally, for crappie in open water I really dont want to go below a #6 hook. Now bluegills, give me a 1/64 #8 hook any day! I feel a crappie's mouth is so large that he will suck in a #6 sized bait (be it plastic or hair) with ease, even 4" crappies.

I had a custom 1/48 mold made for my lightweight stuff, so I typically use #6 hooks and that head. 2# or 4# line and fish them slow, or put under a float if you need help casting them. The fish will suck them right down, so as soon as you feel any bite- set the hook! Heres some squirrel tail and bucktail I've made with them. When I'm not using hair, I use gulp 1" minnows mostly.

I use #10 for crappie, bluegill...KY bass...Smallies....everything. Folks think a #10 size hook is too small for crappie....I prefer it. No issues with it whatsoever. As far as setting the hook...I haven't set a hook in years. Due to the jigs and the rods I use the fish hook themselves. If you want to see just how well micro jigs work check out my YouTube channel.....TroutMagnetMan. Whatever micro jig head you choose make sure it is as sharp as you can get.

The smallest hooks I use on my hand ties are size 10 and use these for Bluegills. The smallest I use for Crappie is a size 8. I'm jigheads 1/48 or smaller. I don't consider anything larger as micro fishing.

I’ve been using the Bobby Garland Itty Bitty swimmers and slab slayers for a few years and like em fine. Opening night, blue ice, tadpole, pearl or monkey milk and double silver rainbow are my most used. Pitch, countdown and slow crawl retrieve works well for me. Twitches trigger bites. I’ve caught crappie over two pounds with a #8 sickle hook and 1/43 head. When you get into fish, there’s no telling what will hit. Everything eats tiny baits. I sometimes use the plastics to figure out what color to use then switch to a hand tie and just wear em out and not have to replace torn up bodies.

I should try dropping down to size 10. I had settled on 8s and have been happy with that size, but I have lots of flies from the old days size 10 and 12, and they did well with Pans and crappie.

    for real small plastics in the 1 inch range i like a 1/32 or 1/64 with a number 8 or 10 .
on 4 lb test if possible so it will act accordingly .
from there the presentation is often a pitch and let it fall swinging back to me .
a slow falling small jig is often really deadly on crappie .

Find some turner jones micro jigs,
1/128 and 1/256oz as i recall. Great for trout too.
Also a Tiny little jig called the skampy 1/500 oz
For easier to find, maybee some custom jigs and sping jigs with plastic bodies size 12 or 10
