This would normally happen when casting or even when using a "lift/fall/lift/fall" presentation. Stingers & boot tails don't normally get wrapped or hooked in either of those presentations.
May just be me, but I had enough negative experiences with them that I gave them up in favor of stingers, boot tails, or carrot shaped plastics ... and have had higher success rates, since. (and I use weedless jigheads when casting)
Yep...that's true the tail always gets mess up by the hook.

try rigging your swimmy tails on hooks not so long on the shank with a smaller gap on the bend and less hook point exposed .
and they also make some little plastic gizmos that go over the hook point that some folks use to keep it weedless
in the end if you rig it like i mentioned and then cover the little hook tip with a crappie nibble and dont do lots of jerking your tails wont meet your hook points all that often .
