As i recall the tenn fish 5lb 7oz was a state and world record. I followed it, all the testing and checking was done before it was certified. If came out of a pond but that was a big crappie. I watched youtube crappie connection they had a biologist on and he explained how a crappie in a pond could get that big.

Terribly big fish from Minnesota, doubt if it gets broken. Notice the year he caught it.....
i doubt the validity of any records from that far back , scales were not very accurate in most cases back then
but such are how legends become legends for sure ....
i heard tell of a mohawk on a spring scale that went 4.75 here in texas from a reputable angler
he also had 2 game wardens that saw it that day and they said it should have been illegal to ketch one that big .
it was 30 or 40 years ago .
and i know of one fella that ketched a monster on a trotline and kept it a secret for a good long time .
it was pushing 4 lbs from what i hear from a reputable angler as well .

Missouri state record Black Crappie was 5.02 lbs and was caught from a private lake in 2006 so this list must be outdated.

While working as a ranger at Enid , I saw a crappie that was 21 inches in length but was not weighed . We were on patrol when a guy told us about the fish . When we arrived the man camping at Chickasaw had cleaned his limit and told us the remains were in the trash can . We dumped them out and easily identified the beast . With closed mouth and pinched tail fish was 21 inches . I still wonder till this day what it would have weighed . Old man said he could get two samaches off each side . lol

Since people and tournaments have and use digital scales these days, I think that states should also use that method of weighting them. Pa still uses ounces, so then you have to figure out how to convert the .01 thru .99 to ounces. Case in point, just a few weeks ago, a guy caught a 4+ crappie on Lake Wilhelm, in North Western Pa. It was thought, that it was a new record, until they converted it to ounces, then it wasn't anymore. Here they only have one crappie record. I believe that it's time in all states to make a change to their weighing methods, if not already changed. 16 ounces in a pound, versus a digital going .01 thru .99.

Will add that in Pa, to break a record, it has to go 2 ounces past the old record.
