Jig For Slabs

Good Evening Fellow Crappie Anglers, I'm catching crappie but it takes several before I hit the slab. I've been running two 1/32 double jibs and keep catching the little guys. I'm running ultra light gear which I prefer but I don't know what jig size I need now. What are you using to catch those slabs?

I never use anything real small here , 1/8 and 1/4 oz . More about where you fish than baits . Little fish will hit big baits here. Especially in Spring, Crappie tend to group up by size a lot. Since we went to using livescope, we catch way less dinks since we can see what we are pitching to .

1/16 and possibly 1/8 here for the spring run , bigger bold colored baits will get bit this time of year by big crappie .

I use 1/16 ans 1/32d here. Anything white, chartreuse or with some sparkle seems to work well

An interesting question. I put forth here if you fish for Crappie where Crappie are not on the local food chain you catch much bigger fish. I have found the big Crappie are not on the menu for other, larger, predator fish so when I'm looking for bigger fish I fish bigger water. Dinks always need lots of cover where Slabs will suspend over the cover out in the open. Fish shallower & catch bigger fish, fish in the cover catch smaller fish. My

@CrappieKila it really depends on your style of fishing. I'm 1/8 - now 3/16 Year round unless Dock shooting or fishing shallow where I will fall back to a 1/16th. This time of the year your task is FINDING THEM. If you put barbed wire in front of them they will hit it.

This time of year while fishing shallow I stick with 1/16 jigs. I go larger as they go deeper. 1/8 during post spawn and when fishing deep or chasing them with livescope I use 3/16 jig heads with size 4 or 2 hooks. during the winter and summer I downsize my baits. 1.25 baits with 1/32 heads and size 8 hooks. Crappie seem to get real finicky when it gets really hot or really cold so I downsize my baits.

Thank you for all the helpful information. I caught a couple of slabs tonight using an Ultra Light with 2lb test line. Talk about a fight on your hands that was some fun stuff. They were hitting a 1/32 jig head using a mayfly plastic, in blue.

We use 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 oz white and chartreuse.

Only reason i have other colored bodies if cause they go on sale and have chart. in them.
