I have a family member in Kentucky with a two acre lake he stocked with crappie, bass, catfish, and hybrid bluegill thirteen (13) years ago. On a whim, Saturday I drove over to their lake and used a crappie jig. Next three hours I caught 18 slabs with a very consistent weight of 14-15.5 oz. After the second crappie, I knew there was something special about these fish because of the black line from the fin to the mouth. Never seen anything like this but I'm also sorta new to fishing.
Is it possible these are the original crappie that were introduced 13 yrs ago?
Will these crappie reproduce? Hate to start taking these out of their lake if there's no chance of them coming back cause they're not really mine!
Last, I know this isn't a fair question but how many crappie can I estimate in this 2 acre lake? A few, pretty good amount, or loaded. lol
I tried to do some research on the Internet on these crappie with a black stripe but it appears there are several different strains. Hey, I realize we might never know the exact answers but it might be good for discussion.
thanks in advance

Those would be Blacknose Crappie ... likely part of the original stock (or subsequent stock, if he has re-stocked since the original stocking). They're not Magnolia Crappie unless somehow he got someone to go to Mississippi & seine out some from one of their small state run lakes & transported them here. They're not "hybrids" .... just a strain of Black Crappie that have a genetic marker that creates the black stripe. They will reproduce.
If the lake is only 2 acres ... I wouldn't think there'd be all that many Crappie in there, considering the other species present as well. But, if they are the offspring of the original stocked Crappie, then he's managed his "lake" well as far as how many & what size of each of the species he's let be taken from there. Each one of those 4 species of fish will eat the fry & young of one or more of the other 3 species, which will keep the numbers in check & allow the surviving fish to grow larger at a normal rate.
If he gave you permission to fish there & take out whatever you catch ... then I wouldn't worry about it.
shurt thanked you for this post
