Unpainted jig head is what is used on one of my most productive jigs the Gray ghost, which imitates baitfish very well. Silver gray in color." (CrappiePappy)

So would I be correct in saying, I use colored jigs on my unpainted jigs?

I've always referred to jig heads as a piece of lead molded around a hook and whatever is attached to them as either soft plastic [name], feathers or fur, live minnows, finesse lure, etc.

The question has been asked many times and now I'm wondering what the questioners were referring to.

    Spoonminnow:

You bring up an interesting topic.

When someone says "jig" I always think of the item that has the hook and weighted head. The poured plastic item that can easily hooked onto the jig head while out fishing is what I refer to as "the plastic, plastic, or the bait".

It seems on this forum the term jig refers to the plastic part of the unit. It is just something that I have gotten used to when reading the threads on this site.

I would like to hear other anglers opinions on this. Is this a regional thing, an age thing or what?

    I think it's just a "learned" thing

Had a conversation with my buddy, Slabeye, about calling his Slabanator plastic bodies ... "jigs" ... and his reply was that was what he learned to call them. And in a roundabout way that kinda makes sense if the "hook/lead" is called a "jighead" : the head of the jig (which would mean the "jig" is the body and the lead is the head of the jig, and the hook is just a given.

Suffice it to say that the common term "jig" seems to have several different meanings, depending on whom you ask, and like most "learned" things in life ... you're not going to get people to change what they learned to call something, very easily. (taking for instance the pronunciation of our beloved fish's name : The word crappie comes from Canadian French crapet “sunfish.” Speakers of English borrowed the word first as crappé [krop-é], pronounced like “crop-ay,” which then spawned the variant croppie [króp-e].)

    I see.
Ebay and all other sources for jigs list many types of jigs: leaded, stand-up, weedless, silicone skirted bass jigs, Ned Rig, Arkie, tube, round head, tear drop, specialty jigs for certain lures and the list goes on. All show bare hooks. (BTW a living rubber or silicone skirted bass jig is not complete until a soft plastic trailer or body is added, same for crappie jigs that have different body types added.) Many designs of drop-shot soft plastics are nose-hooked for crappie - no jig head is used.

If NIMROD means lure color and not jig head color, than I do have favorite colors for different lure designs that seem to work better than others.
But again, unpainted jig heads - ALWAYS.

When I say "jig", I'm referring to the jig head AND the body. That's probably because I grew up fishing marabou jigs tied by my dad. You can't separate the head from the body in that case.

Other than marabou jigs, what are other jig names that describe what they are or represent?
