They are fish eating machines, fun to watch but they are hard on fish.
I have seen them on elk and anderson creek. I have fished a dock with nothing and then seen a otter can't say that was the reason. They are fun to watch but i don't want them to get in numbers. I think they are protected but wouldn't brother anyway.

Terrible critters if they find your pond. They will kill fish just for the joy of it.

I ran across a couple of them once. They had themselves a side down the bank into the water and were having a ball. I think that's the only ones I've seen. This was in NE NC.

I see otters pretty often where I fish. They're cool animals and a sign of a healthy environment.

They are all over Mid-TN. TWRA reintroduced them years back and they have taken off big time. Some folks are not happy about them as has already been said they flat eat some fish.

I see their tracks and slides into holes in the ice in our stream in the winter. When they slide their tail leaves a groove in the snow. You can tell when they do it for fun, too, with lots of grooves, like kids sledding. Have not seen one yet here, just the tracks.
Good numbers in Arkansas . I have shot and trapped them for the hides . Have caught a couple in gill nets commerical fishing .

I think that's why we don't have many in these parts , trapping was pretty big business back in the day .
We made pretty good money as teenagers stacking up hides . a 243 ,a 22 and a 12 guage ,a q beam ,a 12 foot john boat and 3 car batteries and 2 paddles would flat fill the boat up on one drift down the mighty trinity in the middle of the night .
when we trapped we used to just pull over and do sets in every little bar ditch all over the place . we never caught an otter or shot an otter only because we never saw one

Great pictures! They are the bane of small pond fisheries however. Once a family moves through, the fish takes a serious dive. And if you see one, there are more.
