I fish a lot of jigs, both crappie and smallmouth, and prefer a jig without a barb and the softest plastic baits. Glue is your friend. But I've seen the vid by Richard Gene about making weed guards. If you have time this will work fine. I try to use a single wire weed guard on any jig fishing when the need arises. If I have time to make up jigs I'll be fishing.

Cheap unpainted ball head jigs for me for crappie. A good hook file comes in handy too even with a weed guard.

I have on many occasions fished a hand tied chennile and hair or hackle tails the entire day catching at times my limit of crappie on one jig. I couldn't do that with any of the many plastics I own. I have fished a lot of plastics for crappie quite successfully. Not trying to talk down plastics.

I made a boo-boo. Do want barb on hook just don't want collar with bait keeper

collared jig heads will kill even the toughest of plastics really quickly .
limits tackle and constant pursuit make the toughest I have seen but as mentioned less tail action .
a bud I know that makes some baits uses a saltwater formula plastic that is soft and durable .

Yes Limits Tackle is another very good durable bait. Sorry I forgot about them earlier.

look at the expectations post , same bait different rod and day
only 24 on that visit on that one of those baits , but i got lucky and got the jig back after a fish broke me off at the spool .
grabbed the line before the fish realized what happened ...

Bonehead soft plastics are the toughest I've found and I seem to catch just as many fish as softer plastics. In shad body profile, they are pretty much all I will buy now.

Another good bait that I've had great success with has been the "Beaver Bottom Baits". They are still very soft but don't split and will stay on a jig well, but keep in mind they are not a shad body profile if that's what you're looking for. As far as toughness goes, again my vote goes towards Bonehead.

slabanator shad bodies and trim barb on jig down, then super glue.. Bobs jigs are also great order from both. Super glue works wonders on longevity of jig bodies.
