Yesterday a little girl and her mom were fishing from shore at the boat launch and I felt sorry for her because her dad (who fishes bass tournament locally) only gave her a topwater bass lure (Tiny Torpedo). So, being the good samaritan when it comes to kids, I decided to give the 10 yo a lesson as to what to use and how to use it which both mother and young newbie angler greatly appreciated.
Why her father never gave her small jigs and soft plastics to fish is beyond me. I rigged a small jig and one of my best lures on her line and showed her the proper retrieve for this lake. Too bad her rod/reel combo were crap from Amazon - drag didn't work, but as least casting distance was decent and she had a much greater chance of catching most species if she moved around the shore.
Got home, parked, left everything (I thought) in the truck and figured to replace or add to my three boxes (jigs / proven lures/ new designs). This morning all three were gone ! There's no way they were taken at the launch because a man and his daughter were launching a kayak while I was showing the girl. I live on private property and for the life of me can't believe anyone would rip me off there in the middle of the night. I'm sure the boxes were in the proper place last time I looked so if any fell out of the truck I would have noticed.
Oh well, back to filling new boxes and good thing I've posted and saved (on PC) many pictures of basic tackle and new designs so that I can start again. Guess locking the truck will be necessary from here on in, whether showing someone how to fish with my attention diverted or at home. I read somewhere someone also recently had that same thing happen - theft of tackle. Sad that anyone would stoop so low, but as they say **it happens. At least I'll be better organized this time and not carry so much stuff !

That is why concealed carry was invented.
When replacing the lost tackle don't forget the Tiny Torpedoes.
Great job with the girl!

Sorry to hear of your loss, spoon. There are a lot of lowlifes out there. Maybe someday you’ll spot your tackle box and can have a talk.

Sorry for the stolen tackle, but what a great guy. We need more folks like you helping others. Then there would be no need for concealed weapons.

Thanks guys.
Update: fortunately I had quite a bit of stocked hand made and modified lures stored and remade others from photo reminders on my PC. Jig box is set to go.
Have learned my lesson re: making sure my stuff is secure in the cab of my truck before leaving a lake. Still a mystery where and when it all went missing. Oh well, no point in dwelling and rest assured I will catch a bunch tomorrow god willing.
Good luck tomorrow. It’s a shame the world we live in today. I am sitting here watching Andy Griffith as I type this and wish life was as simple as it was on the show. I am sorry you had to experience a loss but you have a great outlook!

Sorry for the misfortune but thumbs up on working with the girl. Those of us who make our own aren’t set back as bad as those that have to buy new. I travel much lighter than I did in younger days. Realized how much I carried that never got used. Lots of backpacks in use these days. If had any knees I’d have a pretty good one for my walkabout rig.

I had this feeling that her father was more interested in tournaments than teaching his daughter how to fish and the real reasons all of us on crappie.com share in common: fresh air, peace and the excitement of the strike. Her rod/reel combo was obviously something her mother not knowing a thing about fishing recently ordered from Amazon - not her old man. Just seeing her enthusiasm and concentration hoping to catch something made me feel sorry for her situation, knowing that eventually both would die from neglect. A mother can only do so much and again, she was greatly relieved that someone took the time to explain the basics such as how to cast a light lure, what angle to hold the rod and what to do when a fish strikes. I wish her the best of luck in all respects.Sorry for the misfortune but thumbs up on working with the girl.
Funny though, a young girl and her brother sharing the same gear a month or so ago came up to me as I was loading the boat and asked what kind of knot to use. Same cheap crap rod & spincast reel combo with 20# test mono that was so old it had coils coming off the rod when cast. I was going to add new braid to my reel anyway so I replaced the mono with a casting distance or more of line taken from my reel, showed her the uni-knot and gave her a lure because someone had sold her dying or dead earthworms. She and her older brother gave me all their attention and maybe were a bit surprised - but very thankful - that a white dude would help them.
