I'm not a fan of Mr Crappie line, but your rod and reel sound fine to me. Maybe it's your technique:

    Hi chetc,

Just curious as to how much line you are putting on your reel? IMO a spinning reel needs to be filled, for maximum casting distance.
What time is it? IT'S CRAPPIE TIME!

I bought my husband a Richard Gene replica off of Amazon for his birthday last year, just on a lark, and he loves it. We are both dockshooters and use BnM Sharp shooters a lot but that eagle claw has become his go-to rod. We mainly use 1/24 jigs but 1/32 on occasion too. It has good strength and sensitivity, he just really likes the backbone. And it is pretty cheap!

The bigger the diameter of the spool on your reel, the easier it is to get distance casting due to larger, less tight coils.

I have an older 5.5 Featherlight UL and I love it. Not for every one though. The Eagle claw fiberglass Featherlights tend to be soft action, essentially noodle rods, which can take some getting used to.

    Hi Ketchn

i do have some line twist, a few times when i cast a few coils come off the spool. not good, will look into this reel magic or possibly a line conditioner

I would go with one of the following:

    Stren Crappie Mono
    SOS from Trout Magnet
    Trilene XL
