they are definitely there. I think they originally put them on wheeler refuge.
several years ago a wildlife officer caught several small hatchlings and had them on display at the visitor center @ wheeler. they kept them there a few weeks and turned em loose again. they could be anywhere in the river system now i guess. i have heard of 1 small gator being caught up near langston @ chisenall springs area about 10 yrs ago. they been here a while but you rarely hear of any problems with them

i wish people would leave our gators alone, if you see one its a blessing, its rare to see them, they dont bother anyone here around decatur, they been here for years, as long as people respect them and dont feed them, they want be a problem, but just wait some dumb azz will try to feed one and get bit , then you got all these rednecks out trying to kill them, a few years back a gator was found floating were someone shot and killed it,, im as big of a hick as the rest of my bama brothers, but theres some that just want a reason to go shoot something...

    Default Grand Lake

A 4 footer was found on the boat ramp at Grand Lake in Celina, Ohio. It was all wrapped in fishing line and halfway out of the water. Had to be a staged event..... ain't no gators in Ohio!!!

hey jhef, i agree totally now i know where to look i see them all the time but not once has one bothered me. its great to see mother nature out there in the wild like that and as long as people arent harrassing them there will never be a problem. heck theyve been here since 1978 and how many probs have we had?

They had Gator infestation at Redstone Arsenal in the early 80's. Had to call in the experts to thin them out. You might remember this. I was living in Arab then.

Gators are common in most of the lakes here in Louisiana, and we see them almost every day while fishing. My last trip to a swampy LA lake named Wallace Lake I counted 6 gators while fishing. There were 2 full grown adults ranging in the area of 12 to 13 feet in length, 3 young ones about 3 feet, and one baby from this years hatch. I've fished there since I was 12 years old and have never had a problem with them, but an old guy cautioned that I would be OK as long as I didn't get between the mama and the nest during the spring. Sounded like good advise to me, and we had a long talk about how to handle it if I did stumble between mama and the nest. They nested mostly in view from the water, but the nest was made of leaves, twigs and mud, and they are hard to see, especially if you're focused on where you're gonna cast next. Keep your eyes open and you'll be ok.

I saw gators all the time when I lived in FL around Daytona. There was a nature preserve I fished all the time that had a 14 footer that came out of the canals every afternoon and sunned itself in the middle of the road I needed to walk on to get to a good spot. That thing was HUGE. I got within about 50 feet of it once on the road before it ran off onto the water. Then it used to swim about 50 - 75 feet into the canal and just sat there floating in the water watching me fish. Trust me I kept one eye on him at all times. There were others there. A couple more over 10 feet and a bunch of 6-10's. It made fishing there real interesting besides the millions of migratory bird there as well. Fascinating place. I also caught the largest bass of my life there - 8 lbs.
Good things come to those who bait.
