Put a #5 tapered clam shell type split shot 12-18" above the jig.

All depends on what you like I keep all kinda size heads up to 1/4 oz! If it’s windy and your fishing deeper I will go to a 1/4 oz! But different weight heads also change the action of the bait

I vertical jig mostly in summer with one hand held rod. I usually use a 1/32 to 1/16th ounce heads depending on wind and how deep I'm fishing. I'm more of a bass guy, so when I'm crappie fishing I like to keep it simple. Have a decent st croix light action rod that is pretty sensitive, and I enjoy feeling them hit the jigs.
Thank you for all the replies. Wind was very strong Saturday and the river, creeks and sloughs were muddy.
I rigged one pole with 1/8 on bottom and 1/16 on top. the other with 1/2 oz lead on bottom and 1/16 above it.
Got skunked. The ole garmin was showing fish and bait scattered from top to bottom. Water had cooled back to 67 degrees too. The main creek runs 10-15 fow. Most of the fish I saw were out over the channel.
Think I'll move to my other river. Drove by it this morning and water looks better.
Might need to start a page for depressed and defeated fishermen. lol
Stay light. Add split shot as needed
