Welcome from Central Florida to you and your boys.
I remember my first crappie that built this fire that now burns within. It wasn’t my first, but it was my first slab that was no doubt over a pound and a half. I haven’t been the same since. It’s a fun pursuit with some really good folks along the way. Now that you have a better understanding of what it takes, it will come easier. Sometimes. They’re still fish and don’t always want to come out and play. Enjoy.......

Thanks all! We ended up having a fun bad weather day on the water. I gave my son the "bad weather out" option when we looked at the waves on the lake and the dark clouds in the sky, and he wanted to go out anyway....then once we got catching some fish said he wanted to never leave. We caught a ton of small bluegill in the hydrilla and lilly pads at 1.5-3', but only one Crappie. I caught one and my son almost had his first...but the two pound test broke as he lifted it out of the water to bring it into the boat. Though he didn't get the fish, he now has his first "the big one that got away" story...which he loves talking about to everyone who will listen.
Next nice day, we'll be back at it.
