we regularly use rods up to 16' long, all depends what youre doing
at some point i bought used 2 brown 8' fishing rods. they have small reels. they actually say crappie rods on them and 6' test string. i am going by memory and only bought them because they were at a yard sale cheap. at the time i wasn't into crappie fishing so i never used them. ok to the point. i usually research and watch videos of how to's before i do anything such as fishing different fish. of all the video's of people crappie fishing i have never seen someone use such a long rod. am i missing something?

I use 5' - 9' rods for casting purposes. I have rods from 5' - 14' long. Like Hambandit says, rod length depends on what technique/style of fishing you're doing.
rod length is relative to the application . some use real long rods and some not so much .
some presentations and situations require reach and others require combat lengths.
when we dock ketch we use typically under 7 foot long . I prefer 5 or 6 in that application .
when I am casting a float or in a boat vertically jigging I like an 8 or maybe 7 .

Watch a bunch of different Crappie fishing videos on Youtube and be paying more attention to how they do it, and what they use to do it, more than watching what they catch. You will find that for the most part, 12’ poles will be used for trolling as opposed to being hand held for long periods. For single pole fishing and especially casting, shorter rods are far more popular.
Nothing wrong with 8 ftr's... especially when the price is right. But if the string is old, I would replace it...
