What an awful tragedy. I can't even wrap my head around it. Prayers to the families and friends.
I just read that the dam has a security camera. Boat was seen going over the dam (through the open spillway gates) at 8:15 am on Saturday. Occupants were seen in boat as it went over. Since an official missing notice did not get turned in until Sunday evening, a lot of time elapsed. The tournament launch was only 1/2 mile from the dam. Boat had engine troubles at take off. Captain must have underestimated the flow/current of that high water. Either motor died shortly after leaving the dock or the dad tried to get the boys a day of fishing with just a trolling motor.
Jesus, that is sad.

This is such a tragic thing. Who knows what really happened, and I’m sure blame will be laid to many different people/factors soon after they are found. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. I believe it is time for extra precautions are made to make sure events like this never happen again. If not for only preventing deaths, but also to prevent terrorists from causing damage to these dams. If a small boat like this could get close enough to go through the dam, then it is possible for a terrorist to launch a boat and let it float through and bomb the dam and causing mass casualties down stream. The TVA needs to take precautions to keep this from ever happening again.

I thought long and hard about responding to this. This is a very tragic event and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved. As to taking precautions to keep boats away from the dam. Many of us on crappie.com....and many others elsewhere.....fought very hard to keep our rights to fish at the dams....yes right up next to the dam. The Freedom To Fish Act was passed to continue to allow us to fish around dams in KY and TN in 2013. Several of the dams I fished at were unceremoniously closed to boats....kayaks.....at the whim of one Lt. Colonel. We don’t want that to happen again. As to a boat being able to carry enough explosives to damage one of those dams it is highly unlikely it would make a dent in those structures. An individual tried in the mid 70’s to blow up JPP Dam in Nashville.....see article. Disabled Worker Held In Nashville Dam Blast - The New York Times Getting close to a dam in a boat is the same as a boat locking though.....so if you don’t want boats close to the dam one must assume you would not want them to lock though.....which is part of the dam. As tragic as this is I don’t think the answer is to prevent access to dam fishing to us. It was tried once and I don’t think we want it to happen again.

Thanks for all the prayers. This is in my neck of the woods since Obion county is next to Fulton county where I live. Our church family know several of the relatives of the family and family members themselves. Prayers are being constant for locating them. Army man is correct in that the operation has been reclassified as a recovery effort. Prayers for all and for the first responders and volunteers still on scene.
BuckeyeCrappie thanked you for this post
Prayers lifted up
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.
