Smallest hook you can use we prefer #4.
We use Crappie nibbles..On Barb of hook..
On or over the barb..The crappie nibble when wet is very slick acts as a weed Guard...We Fish lots of hook eating trees in our lake..Hope this helps..Add Slab sauce for A slimmer Jig....Don't tell anyone..Top sceret..or G sauce...

I would likely set an anchor out way up current and let out lots of rope . when I had the boat over the fish I might use the trolling motor just a bit to keep it right on top of them . whatever the depth the fish are holding would be about a foot deeper than my jig most of the time . like stated before a nibble on the hook point and I would drop to a number 6 with a fat body plastic to help keep me from hooking something other than a fish .
it will require a hard hookset in my opinion if they are that deep if you use mono to ensure a nice penetration on anything except that clear web in the mouth . if it thumps ,tugs or pulls it aint a tree limb , if not it likely is a tree limb , just saying .

It's really hard to explain but I can show you. I'd like to see that on the livescope.

I have used jig heads made by Grousefly that have brushguards that look like a toothbrush. I trim them parallel to the point about 1/8” above the point. Remove the rest and harvest away. I used 1/4oz but lighter has worked also. Used 1/8 for a long time but windy conditions demand the heavier jig head. Also used a 2 1/2 and 3” bodies on those, dead stick approach. 3 limits over 11” in three hours in February of’15. It works, just keep figuring out the details. It’s worth it.

Heavier might be better with river current and wind.

Does anyone make a 1/4 head on a smaller, crappie hook. Seems once you go above 1/8 everything is bass sized.

With LS I can fish in the brush and see when the fish is about to take the jig. I never set the hook unless I see the fish on LS on my jig. Then, most any movement indicates he took it, I then set the hook. I seldom get hung up anymore with LS.

Do you use forward view or down view when jigging the brush pile?

Forward for almost everything. Our lake has 40-50 foot depth near the dam but an average of 25 feet deep on the fishing areas so no need to angle it down.
