    Default WHAT—WHAT—WHAT— TO—DO

    Here’s my dilemma......
I live in Southern Indiana and the closest Big Water with decent sized fish is at least 2 1/2 hours away.
Patoka Lake fish are paper thin.
Taylorsville Lake fish are getting better but 10” size limit and few and far between. Plenty of fish but most are 9-9 7/8”.
Kentucky Lake is a pretty good haul and I would have to stay overnight and I probably couldn’t locate fish in 1 day on such a big body of water.
West Boggs is about 80 miles and hear good things about it.
I live on the Ohio River below the McAlpine lock and dam but have only fished for sauger in the river around here. I’ve heard there are crappie in the river.
Don’t think that I am complaining, because I’m not.
I am blessed with good health, great retirement and benefits but seems like the older I get the less I like to drive.(65)
Any lake suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I live in St Louis, in the last two years I’ve fished more in Mississippi than Missouri! Nearest lake is Mark Twain about 2 1/2 hrs away, I don’t like to fish alone, so I hire a guide in Mississippi!

I live close to Rough River Lake and Nolin Lake, both produce good fish and have a 9" limit. If you decide to check either of them out send me a pm and I will try to point you in the right spots.

    Thanks PC
A buddy of mine has a place on Nolin.
More like a Class A lodge than a camp as he calls it.
It has several slips and 2 covered.
He has offered it to me at anytime I want to go free of charge. He and his family only use it on major holidays and a couple weekends throughout the summer.
I haven’t heard too much about the crappie there, only the walleye and striped bass bite. Of course he doesn’t fish!!! Lol

I tournament fish with Kentcuky Crappie Trail and Nolin is one of the lakes we fish. I have pulled several fish 1 1/4lb or better but the quantity is ussually pretty low. I personally prefer to fish Rough River Lake, I have better luck there in both qty and size.
Nolin and Rough are not that far apart so if the bite is off on one you could always try the other. Good Luck

Did Hardy Lake ever come back with decent crappie numbers?

I always enjoyed Taylorsville Lake for crappie. It's been about 5 years though since I fished it.

I used to live in Louisville, as well as Lanesville.

Hardy is currently closed with water drawn way down. They are fixing the boat ramps. It is overtaken with striped bass. Crappie very bad.
Taylorsville is actually closer for me. I always buy Ky non resident license because I fish in the creeks on Ky sided the Ohio River.

Chuck, spend some of that retirement money on a guide on Kentucky lake and spend a 3 day trip there. You’ll learn what to look for and get better each time you go. I’ve been going there 32 consecutive years now and that’s how I started. Met some great friends from crappie.com there too. It’s a huge body of water. Get a guide for the area you intend to fish. There’s a bunch of them all over the lake. Go to Kentucky Vacations at Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley | KentuckyLake.com for all the info you’ll need.

Best you enjoy travel while you can. It only gets harder from this point on. DB Crappie and SK both have videos on using maps to locate the areas of a lake that should hold crappie before you get to the lake. DB video SK video
