Before Christmas I bought two inflatable vest. I am hoping that will make me wear one when I am in the boat
I witnessed a man fall backwards out of his boat today,if it hadn’t been for his partner finally getting the motor shut off things could have been worse. The fellow who fell out wasn’t wearing a life jacket, and had on heavy overalls and an insulated work coat.
The water temp was about 38°F, after several attempts to get him back in the boat to no avail, they managed to tow him to shore hanging onto the side of the boat ,he was in the water about 8 min,it made me think about all the times I fish alone,in the winter in my kayak most often with the PFD hooked over the seat.
Two things I’ve gleaned from this,I need a kill switch on my trolling motor, and I need to invest in a much better PFD that is non intrusive to wear.

The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along
Great lesson relayed to all of us. Thanks for that. Warm water is a completely different scenario than cold water. But both can be deadly.

Get you one of the auto inflates. You won’t even know your wearing it!
I wear mine all the time. I Usually remember to take it off in the truck or after I put the boat up.
I fish alone a lot, got to thinking, what if I hit my head on the way out.
Same with you, what if a boat hits you and your unconscious?

I like my kayak pfd better then the more traditional bass pro one I had. It’s much more comfortable and I like the pockets. I have no problems wearing it all day summer or winter. I keep my fishing license, safety whistle, hemostats, line clippers, knife, fish counter and cell phone in it. Most importantly I know I should be safer by having it on in case of accident.
whatever you have they only work if your wearing them!!!
If you do a lot of colder weather boat fishing your going to want to be warm anyway, so why not invest in somthing like a Frabill I float suit or a Clam Ice Armor Ascent suit.... You stay warm and if you fall out of the boat you float like a cork. I see them on sale a few times a year and there not much more then good bibs and a jacket.
