It’s hard to imagine the sinking line messing up the hook set. Fluoro line sinks and the bass guys don’t have problems setting the hook. It sounds like you have too much slack in the line.
I can not recall ever seeing this before. My son was fishing today with mono line that was bought and spooled this past April and only used about 3 trips. It became difficult to set the hook due to the line sinking. All line near the boat immediately sank so that on a hook set it just simply pulled on the sunk section of line. Have any of you experienced that before? What might cause such a thing? All that I can think of is the line became waterlogged.

If you want to guarantee a floating line, try coating with fly line floatant/cleaner. Fills the pores and it sits right on top. I’ve heard chap stick works too.

I don't think I understand the scenario ? line is supposed to sink unless its floating fly line I thought .
and then the next question is are you float or fly fishing ?

Sounds like he had way to much slack in his line to me.....all mono will sink if you have to much out
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Only explanation I can think of - but from what I been reading on CDC weird things happen around Halloween time! Billbob squirts sauce for me sometimes.

Well guys, using your input I called him to ask some questions. He was in a two man plastic boat in the wind. The boat had only 1 anchor and that caused the boat to continuously swing back and forth. That allowed excess line laying in the water.
Good job y'all
