in stock tanks and farm ponds with crappie in them they are typically the number one food item
Caught some 1" to 2" baby gills in my minnow trap. Will they work in place of minnows for night fishing this time of year?

Just have to watch your state regulations. In Ohio you have to catch them with a hook to use as bait. But they do work awesome as bait!

Yes they'll work great a bait. However, as was mentioned above, all states that I'm familiar with only allow bluegill to be used as bait if caught with hook and line.

I catch micro gills on #16 hook and use em alive to catch Slabs(sometimes). Sometimes I catch a big gill on a #16 fishing for micros or a bass chomps down on a hooked micro.

Agree with the above. Will also add, some places say live bait can only be used on the waters where it was caught.
