greenline, I think he misunderstood you about leaving.

I don't leave my light but I know a guy that does. he put the battery on a float with a light on it(so it don't get run over) and one hanging down with the anchor rope. he then goes to the bar on the lake and gets a few beers in him before coming back. lol

some nights the light will drawn minnows rite off. other nights it wont drawn a thing. catching fish will depend on a lot of things. lights aren't majic but they can really help most nights. I have sat pulling a fish every once in a while, then bam its on. I figure a roaming school moves in to take advantage of the bait? maybe better location could have helped that night? some lakeseem to have a "bite30" also. one lake seems to turn on around 11pm and go till 12 or 1am most nights. another lake I know is hot at dark and for while after and then again before sun up till 8am or so. pick a good lake and learn it good then you can recognize likely spots on other lakes to go try. look around for suspended fish before dark and pick the best areas to try. I like the main basin edges with tall weeds, at top of drop, this time of year.

take a jig rod also. some nights they are under you but don't want lively minnows. for negative slabs ill drop a jigging rap or tube. if they still just come up and look ill go to a drop-shot n ice fly or micro plastics.

I have a green LED underwater light and put a 4 oz weight tied to the bottom and tied a float on a slip knot on the cord to easily set the depth the light will be. Usually 1'-5' underwater depending on depth. Crappie love to sit just outside or under the lights to attack the bait near the surface light. If it is deeper water you can lower it to 5' and drop your lines down accordingly.
I also carry a strong 16 LED light to shine on the water surface to bring the bait to the top like over head lights on a dock. I can also net live minnows in the lights if needed. This light works better at times but the bugs can get bad at times too. No bugs at underwater light. I use both at times to get BIG bait balls under bridges around pilings.
Just have a simple 35 Amp hour battery to use for both and they will last all night!
