I made some for my trailer out of 1 inch conduit bent at a ninty degree angle. I mounted them to the frame in front and back of the wheel carriage. Then I attached a carpet wraped two by four, pressure treated, to eace upright. They are about 1 inch from the boat side and although I've only had the chance to try them out once they worked just fine.

I had ones kind of like this one, http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...004000_200-4-6
that were made out of tube steel bent to attach with 2 u-clamps to the frame. A piece of PVC slid over the top let the boat roll without damaging the paint. The lights were on top and didn't have to worry about burning them out, they never got in the water.
Worked great for my 16' jon.
