You might also want to check your sonar's owners manual. Hummingbird and Lowrance both indicate that using fish symbols instead of straight line technology, can sometimes lead to errors. The thought being that the sensitivity of these units can sometimes indicate fish where only brush or debris is actually there. I do not know the science behind that, but I, for one, do not use the fish symbols for that reason. The manufacturers must know something!

I know that the fish symbols aren't accurate and that the "Pro" crappie fishermen don't use them. But I'm just trying to learn, in my old age, about Crappie fishing and about using electronics. So I take what I see on the screen with a grain of salt. All I meant was that with that many fish symbols on the screen, their are probably at least a few fish in the area where I'm trying to fish. Especially when I see them bunched up on a big ball of shad, or if I see them near a brush pile. But I will check the sensitivity on my Garmin and make sure that it isn't too high. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a section in the User's Manual about checking the sensitivity.

And I also know for a fact that my neighbor isn't telling me about all of his fishing spots. There is another area not too far away, but out of range of my electric motor that has a lot of standing timber and I know that he fishes that area as well. But he did share with me about a couple of places that are within my range and that's where I've been trying to fish. If I could afford a Bass Tracker and a nice outboard motor, I'd be over there in the standing timber with him, and he knows that. But since he also knows that I have a limited range, he has shared with me about an area that I can get to where he fishes and catches fish, and I appreciate his sharing that kind of info with me.

All crappie fisherman are liars if he tells you that he caught them up east you go west, If he tells you blue and white jig was what he used you better use black and pink. And for some odd reason someone gives you a fishing report you better bet its 2 weeks old. And most importantly quit going behind your neighbor try another spot cause I guarantee you hes feeding you with a long handle spoon

Don't be thrown off by featureless bottom. They'll school up in deeper water when the sun starts getting high. When they do it's even easier picking cause you don't have to worry about snags. Speaking of hooks, I've also just lip hooked a minner on a 1/32 oz jig head without the plastic and done fairly well at times. Crappie nibbles or slab sauce works well if they're a little tight lipped too. Picture below was verified to be crappie, no structure around.

I aint a pro and I love fish symbols and I find that they rarely tell tales about it being fish .
and more often than not I ruin fish with my unit set on 2 d and fishee symbols .
I would bet you were all over fish from what you explained on the screen and something wasn't in the mix to make them bite.
of course I could be wrong , but it aint likely as it only happened once a long time ago .
